![]() I had a failed coolant level sensor on my 328i convertible and replaced it with the cheaper one from Pelican ($11, pt #61-31-8-360-855-M400, brand Vemo). Great forum! I've been using this forum for a while and it's time to contribute. If the car is going to tell me on shut down that the coolant is low, why doesn't it admit to the condition when I press the button right before I shut the engine down? I press the CHECK button and the car reports CONTROL CHECK OK, then I turn the engine off and it reports LOW COOLANT. I've wondered why I don't get the message when I specifically ask. I've never seen the message on Engine Start, only on shut down - and I get it with each shut down. For some reason known only to GOD and BMW they consider a burned out tail light more critical than low coolant Sounds crazy but that's the way BMW set it up. That message is only triggered when you first start the car or when you turn it off. Just an FYI.you will never get a low coolant level while the engine is running. If your level is low or you have an air pocket its very possible for the level to drop for an instant and trigger the sensor when you first start the car. Your coolant temp sender for your temp gauge is in the head, blocked by the intake manifold. A popular upgrade is the e30 80/88*C fan temp switch, usually when the clutch fan delete mod is performed. If I'm not mistaken its supposed to measure temps and kick on at 90*C for low aux fan speed, and 98*C for high aux fan speed. The sensor in the radiator is your aux fan temp switch. Sorry to kind of hijack your thread but a good answer can be quite relevant. The sensor inside the reservoir tank is the level sensor for the obc. If there is a sensor on the radiator, was this the one telling me my level was low? If there isn't, why would a perfectly full reservoir detect a problem. ![]() Then the third or so time the warning came on again, the reservoir was fine, so I decided to re-bleed the system, and the radiator took another litre or so of coolant, so obviously the was air in my system. So I would top it up, only an inch or so. This happened a few times, which is normal for the few days after flushing. Is this correct? The reason I ask is that recently after a coolant flush, "check coolant level" came on my OBC. There is a sensor on the reservoir tank and also one on the radiator. Hate to say it, but that is what I have seen. Can someone clarify for me please. The newer "green" coolant from Prestone is labeled to be "compatible" with any color of coolant, so your results will depend on the coolant types that got mixed. A hot reverse power-flush of the radiator might remove some sludge, but then again, maybe not. If you have any overheating problems later, you may have caused that same problem. Orange coolant plus green coolant can and will cause a heavy sludge to form, and I have seen radiators get plugged up severely by that sludge. Two coats ought to do the job there, if you have any bad insulation. Both NAPA and O'Reilly Auto Parts have some brush-on electrical insulation in a bottle, to repair any bad insulation ('way better than tape). That problem may have caused my warning light to come on. I peeled off some of the plastic sheathing around the wires, and insulation was missing near the electrical plug. Replacing the sensor did not help, even though the old sensor actually came apart in my hands. I had the same problem with my '94 Trans Am, the Low Coolant warning light came on, even with the radiator full. Moser 9 Inch Rearend with 4.11 gears 31 Spline Axles and Detroit Tru-Trac Posi Unit.
